The tranquil nafs — Qur'an 89:27
Al-nafs al-muṭmaʾinna — 'the tranquil nafs'. Qur'an 89:27–30 addresses the tranquil nafs at the threshold of return to the Lord: 'yā ayyatuhā al-nafsu al-muṭmaʾinnatu / irjiʿī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyatan' — 'O tranquil nafs, return to your Lord well-pleased and well-pleasing.' The two adjectives in this verse (rāḍiya / marḍiyya) are subsequently treated as their own stations. The heart-centre of the body in the Mujaddidi projection corresponds to this station: the nafs has come to rest in remembrance of God.

Sirhindī, Maktūbāt I.260 (First Daftar, Letter 260), supplies the Mujaddidi interpretive framework for the nafs's refinement into tranquil and accepted states. The Qur'anic wording remains the primary source for the terms; the letter is a later Sufi exposition.
