The inspired nafs — post-Qur'anic Sufi station

Al-nafs al-mulhama — 'the inspired nafs'. The first of the post-Qur'anic expansion-stations. The nafs that has begun to receive direct intuitions of right and wrong from the heart; the inspirations (ilhām) of the Sufi station are distinguished from imaginative or appetitive impulses by their effect of strengthening obedience and humility.

Sirhindī, Maktūbāt I.260 (First Daftar, Letter 260), discusses the Mujaddidi latāif and the nafs as it is refined through the stations. It is used here for the later Sufi mulhama formulation; the Qur'an itself does not present a seven-stage sequence under this name.
