The self-reproaching nafs — Qur'an 75:2
Al-nafs al-lawwāma — 'the self-reproaching nafs'. Al-Ghazālī describes this station as the awakening of conscience: the nafs that has begun to recognize its own wrongdoing and to reproach itself, though not yet stable in obedience. Qur'an 75:2 swears by the lawwāma alongside the Day of Resurrection — 'lā uqsimu bi-yawmi al-qiyāmati / wa lā uqsimu bi'l-nafsi al-lawwāmati' — placing the self-reproaching nafs near the eschatological judgment as a witness against the soul.

Qur'an 75:2 (Sūrat al-Qiyāma) invokes the self-reproaching nafs as an oath, placing the lawwāma beside the resurrection and judgement. This is the direct Qur'anic locus for the lawwāma designation.

The relevant ethical treatment is Iḥyāʾ, Quarter of Perils, Book 21 (Wonders of the Heart) and Book 22 (Training the Soul, Refining Character, and Treating the Heart's Ailments), especially their accounts of inner faculties, self-accounting, and moral reform. Ghazālī supplies the discipline of conscience, not the later numbered seven-station scheme.
