Moving centre

Body movement and motor patterns — lower abdomen

The moving centre — the centre of voluntary body-movement and motor-pattern learning, located at the lower abdomen / lumbar region. It is responsible for the learned automatisms of walking, typing, dancing, sport — actions that have been internalised to the point that the intellectual centre is not required for their execution. Gurdjieff's Movements (the choreographed group practice that became central to his teaching after 1922) are designed precisely to train the moving centre in conscious cooperation with the intellectual and emotional centres. The moving centre is the slowest of the lower centres in learning new patterns and the fastest in executing familiar ones; its competence is the substrate of physical mastery in any craft. We render the rendered point at the lower-dantian landmark, the canonical Daoist lower-belly locus, recognising that the Gurdjieffian body-cartography here echoes the broader Eurasian tradition of locating motor-energy in the lower abdomen.

“The moving centre, like the instinctive, has its principal seat below — and it is the moving centre that learns and stores all the automatic movements of the body.”
