Autonomic regulation — solar plexus / spinal plexuses
The instinctive centre — the autonomic / vegetative centre, located at the solar plexus and the spinal-column ganglia. It is the centre of digestion, breathing, circulation, sleep-and-waking, and of the basic body-states that operate below ordinary conscious awareness. Gurdjieff classifies it among the lower centres (with the moving centre) and treats it as essentially blameless — its dysfunctions are not sins but states. Fourth Way self-observation has practical reasons for distinguishing instinctive from moving: the misattribution of an instinctive process (a digestive discomfort) to an emotional cause (a felt resentment) is a category error responsible for a large part of ordinary unhappiness. The instinctive centre cannot be improved by direct training; it can only be allowed to function unimpeded. We render the rendered point in the upper-abdominal solar-plexus region, between the xiphoid and the navel.
